This fabulous barn restoration is situated in the 18th Century Georgian harbour of Charlestown, approximately two miles from St Austell.It is the oldest building in the picturesque harbour village of Charlestown. Built by Sir Charles Rashleigh for the export of China Clay, this Georgian village is still centred on the harbour - the base for Square Sails fleet of square rigged sailing vessels. fleet of ships and the village itself are often used for filming - "The Three Musketeers", "The Eagle has Landed" etc. The village has two popular local pubs which serve good meals and there is also a restaurant and tea rooms. Charlestown is only a short drive to the Eden project and well located for visiting the attractions of the Cornish Riviera or touring all of Cornwall.The present owner has lovingly restored it, creating an elegant home comprising of two double bedrooms, large drawing room, well equipped kitchen, dining room, sun room and small but very pretty garden and terrace.This lovely home is 50 yards from a quaint traditional fishing harbour and only a stone’s throw from an unspoilt beach and boasts stunning views of the ocean from every room. The Old Smoke House Cornwall has many interesting and picturesque coastal communities, but few come close to matching the intimate character and charm to be found in Charlestown. The village, with its picturesque harbour-side houses, has also featured in a variety of film and television productions including Poldark and The Onedin Line.In Charlestown village around the working harbour are a few small shops, two pubs and two restaurants. A Post office where you can get the daily newspaper. There is also Shipwreck Centre that contains a wealth of artefacts and information about the village and its history. A feature of Charlestown is its annual regatta that takes place around the end of July. On either side of the harbour entrance lies two small beaches to swim, plat or just sit and reflect. There are several good golf courses with the immediate area and the now famous Eden Project is only 5 miles away. There are good road communications via the A30/A38 to the motorway system and flights from Newquay Airport(20 miles) to Gatwick, Stanstead Edinburgh, Cardiff and Bristol. The cottage has two double bedrooms, bathroom, lounge/diner, kitchen and a downstairs guest toilet.Charlestown village is home to an original Georgian working harbour, which was constructed to serve the needs of the local china clay industry. Still in use to day, the harbour has become particularly well known as the mooring place for the many masted traditional Tall Ships. These Ships, together with the largely unaltered harbour side houses, have made Charlestown a popular location for the shooting of many well known films and T V period dramas.Charlestown Village lies about one mile from St Austell and has its own range of local businesses including general stores/sub post office, pub & two restaurants.There are several good golf courses within the immediate area, excellent sailing opportunities from Fowey Harbour, 7 miles to the East, and an extensive network of coastal and inland footpaths, often across National Trust land, providing many miles of superb walking. The St Austell Bay boasts several sandy bathing beaches and the world renowned Eden Project is only 5 miles to the North East.There are good road communications via the A30/A38 to the motorway system, main line railway station at St Austell (London Paddington about four and a half hours) and flights to Gatwick and Stanstead leave from Newquay, with free transfers from Newquay and local railway stations. |
